How we dispose of and commemorate our dead is fundamental to human culture. This study day explores themes and issues in the study of burial practices. We all know about the tomb of Tutankhamun and indeed graves often provide revealing evidence about past lives. Case studies from a wide variety of periods and places will be used in addressing topics such as social organisation and status, spirituality and religion, territory and legitimation and the ethics of analysing human remains in archaeology.
